Measuring Up

"I have used Measuring Up Math and Reading in small groups over an extended period of time as a tutorial. The kids loved the books and never could decide which they wanted to do first! We played lots of games with the lessons contained in the math books and used the "practice" questions as our bank to furnish a constant supply of problems. The kids loved that they could always go back to the initial lesson as a refresher. I found it a very easy book to use and one that required very little extra planning time from me. The lessons are pretty much laid out for you and basically because I can never leave anything alone; I just added some games and contests to the mix for some razzle dazzle. The kids loved discussing the strategies the book implemented to solve problems and these discussions helped me to understand just where the "faulty thinking" link was in the kids and together, we corrected it. Out scores went up! The kids actually found the test (FCAT) to be "easy" -- usually a Kiss of Death statement from kids but this time, it was happily true. We did not use the books this year and we are paying for it. Our scores have dropped considerably. I think that the "money" problem that caused us not to use the books this year will not be an issue for next year."

"I liked using Measuring Up in my classroom for 2 reasons. First, Measuring Up offers questions more challenging than the FCAT so that when it came time for my students to take the test, they were ready and prepared to succeed. Second, using Measuring Up DPT Test 1, 2 and 3 showed student growth over time, so that I could easily construct and target my lesson plans."

-Maleika Lawson, 4th Grade Teacher, Bayview Elementary School, Jacksonville, FL

"Measuring Up was one of the contributing factors to improvement in student test scores on the FCAT. It targets skills that are needed to succeed. We use Measuring Up during our focus hour for whole group instruction and small tutorial groups that target the educational benchmarks. Our students, as well as our teachers, benefit from the format, delivery and the lessons."

-Sylvia Rappaport, Reading Coach, Liberty City Elementary School (Miami, FL)
