The Heroes Don't Just Happen series is a collection of high-interest, multicultural biographies that teaches students the value and importance of character development. The series covers five different fields: Sports, Entertainment, Space, Business, and Politics; the book for each field provides students with easy-to-read biographies of five famous personalities.
Using the text, photos, quotes, timelines, interviews, and maps, the biographies teach about these special individuals who, through their success, have exemplified the value of hard work and persistence in overcoming personal and racial barriers. Plus these real-life stories show how each of the heroes exhibited one, if not more, of the six main ideas in character development - Caring, Civic Virtue, Citizenship, Justice/Fairness, Respect/Responsibility, Trustworthiness.
Each Heroes book has an accompanying companion Practice Journal. After reading the biographies, students complete the Practice Journal, reinforcing reading skills and improving their vocabulary, sequencing, and comprehension skills. Students are also encouraged to think and write about their own individual goals, values, and beliefs through the guided writing and personal journal entries.
