Peoples Top Picks

Peoples Top Picks is a new initiative that delivers insights on how educators across the country are addressing current hot topics in education.

This month's Top Pick: Technology in the Classroom
Mrs. Bell gives a great, integrated example of how she uses technology in the classroom. "I teach math to 8th grade students using the Math Stations approach. The students love the math stations approach because it allows them the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts in various ways. Students use computers (Cyber Outlet) to learn concepts through programs like Practice Path™ which gives them a choice in working in Test Mode or Game Mode. (Because I have student computers in my classroom, we do not utilize a computer lab) Students use the Mimio Technology (Practice Plaza) for interactive lessons on white board that has been transformed into a SmartBoard. Students use CompuCart MultiMedia System at "The Shoppe" station to view videos, powerpoint presentations and, afterwards, justify and explain their thought processes via Elmo Document Camera. Students use Flip Cameras to create videos and movies that teach math concepts through music in songs/rap and acting. Students use a variety of manipulatives for hands-on activities and tasks at the "Proof Place" station. Students use clickers to demonstrate mastery of concepts through participation in Quiz Bowls, Jeopardy Competition, Pre-Assessment, Post-Assessment and Ticket-out-the-Door using assigned clickers. Clicker reports are used as part of the data analysis process for instructional purposes in meeting the needs of each and every student. Academic performance as well as motivation increases through the use of math stations as students are not doing the same type of work every day."
- Mrs. Chandra Bell, Math Teacher, Carver Road MS, Griffin-Spalding County School System, GA

Words of Wisdom

Slow to jump on the technology bandwagon? Your colleagues have some advice for you.

"Don't give up! Keep trying new ways -- encourage students to help you or others -- attend workshops."
- Dr. Coon, White Oak MS, Northwest Local Schools, OH

"The kids relate to it and can overcome any mental block or apprehension to it, so allow those kids who are trustworthy to help. They can run the SmartBoard, they can create PowerPoints or movies to show and interact with, which in turn proves to the kids that adults can be life-long learners."
-Dave Baker, Site Administrator, Summit Continuation High School, Kern Union High School District, CA

"Just try it!! Classes and course work are helpful as an introduction, but the best experience is just to make yourself sit down and start. I have learned more by attempting to use different technology than any class has taught."
- Alice L. Talbot, Reading Specialist, Newport News, VA

At Peoples Education, we continually seek input from educators at all levels to improve our partnership with schools and districts. Your opinion counts! Each month we will reach out to the education community for feedback on a specific topic. We will post what we learn in this newsletter and on our informative Facebook page.
