January 2011 - Newsletter

Peoples Top Picks is a new initiative that delivers insights on how educators across the country are addressing current hot topics in education.

This month's Top Pick: 21st Century Learning

Our polls indicate the top 21st Century learning skills are: information, media, communications, and technology skills, and global awareness. What’s missing from this list?

We’re hearing these 21st Century learning skills need more emphasis: initiative and self-direction, financial and business literacy, and leadership and responsibility. Do you agree?

Creative 21st Century Learning Projects from our Advisors:

“Students were given a budget of $1,000,000 to expand the local zoo. They had to purchase animals and create habitats for the animals. They had to create an Excel spreadsheet to show the purchase of the animals and a running total for the budget. Research was needed for each team to determine what animals would be best for the guidelines that they were given. They had to spend within $1000 of the one million.”

-Deborrah Holland, Educator, 75th Street ES LAUSD

“Students need to create a country whose government works for the benefit of its people (after reading Animal Farm). The presentation is given as a powerpoint and speech.”

-Tony Bucco, Literacy teacher

Words of Wisdom

What are your colleagues saying about 21st Century Learning?

“I avoid questions that have single ‘right’ answers and turn to questions that require interpretations and nuance. If I do my job right, students leave with even more questions!”

- Kimberley Gilles, Teacher, Monte Vista High School, San Ramon Valley Unified School District

“Try not to spoon-feed students. Students need to struggle with new material and construct meaning for themselves.”

-Julie Merrill, High School Math Instructional Specialist, Plano ISD

“Allow them the freedom to use those skills even when they reach beyond those that the educator has reached.”

-Deborrah Holland, Educator, 75th Street ES LAUSD

“Use technology whenever possible. It is not only current, but keeps their interest alive.”

- Cynthia J Warner, 7th grade math teacher, Armstrong Middle School, Plano Independent School District
