February 2011 - Newsletter

Peoples Top Picks is a new initiative that delivers insights on how educators across the country are addressing current hot topics in education.

This month's Top Pick: Response to Intervention (RTI)

We’re hearing that the real value of RTI is being able to monitor students’ progress and immediately catch any students who are falling behind.  Educators are using both online and print instructional interventions to bring students up to grade level achievement.

Typical RTI environments include the regular classroom or push-in/pull-out programs, where aides and specialists can work with small groups or individual students.

Real-life examples of RTI in the classroom:

“If a student has below-level grades or test scores or some sort of problem, he or she is taken to a ‘collaborative’ conference where teachers, administrators, nurse, and counselor meet to discuss the problem and ‘brainstorm’ possible solutions. Once I had a student whose grades suddenly plummeted. We discovered Mom had left home. One of her former teachers volunteered to come in early and fix her hair and visit with her each morning. This changed everything! Most of the time, we use data collected and analyze it, then form a specific plan to target the gaps a student might have. This is done through additional small group tutoring before or after school, AMI intervention within the regular classroom, OR perhaps a TAKS buddy who acts as a cheerleader as well as a tutor. We have multiple interventions - some use people, while others use technology - such as istation for improving reading (a digital program that keeps up with each individual student's progress).”

-Lee Anne Brenner, 4th grade teacher, Katy Elementary, KISD

“[We] identified students at risk in kindergarten for phonemic awareness. [We] implemented a program focusing on goals surrounding phonemic awareness. Students [were] pulled in small groups three times a week. Students showed huge improvements in this area in a short time due to very targeted instruction.”

-Christina Karg, Principal, Vintage Parkway School

Words of Wisdom

Hear your colleagues’ advice about how to start implementing RTI:

“PEOPLE are your biggest resource. Then, form a plan, analyze data from the implementation to see what's working, and adjust accordingly. We're working with children - nothing is set in stone and solutions have to be creative, not by rote.”

-Lee Anne Brenner, 4th grade teacher, Katy Elementary, KISD

“Become very knowledgeable about what RTI is. Understand the tier process. Identify support staff who are able to provide daily support and instruction. Talk to staff in other school districts who are implementing RTI. Establish an RTI team and meet weekly to discuss school goals, expectations, etc. Visit Web sites such as interventionscentral.com”

-Patricia Campbell-Bell, K-8 Literacy

“It is a slow process. Don't just make assumptions about students, look at the data. Then do what is best for the student.”

-Andrea Maslan, Principal, Costello Elementary School, Lyons School District 103
