Monthly Spotlight: Summer Slide

Summer is here! To students this means one thing, No School! Unfortunately students don’t realize that these two months off from school can affect their learning habits. Summer slide is a learning deficit that takes place during the summer. Research has shown that this does affect students and may set them back in their future. President Obama explained summer slide in his National Summer Learning Day Proclamation on July 6, 2009: “Like an athlete out of practice, a child who takes long breaks from learning can face academic setbacks. This problem is especially prominent during the summer, when students may lose more than two months of progress. Children must remain engaged to maintain and build upon their current academic achievement.”

Taking a break from school doesn’t always mean taking a break from learning. Summer slide can affect every student no matter the grade level. Take a look at the research we did and take advantage of these tips for students to use during the summer:
· Read anything, anytime - Teachers can assign a summer book to read or parents can encourage their children to read with them with a magazine, the newspaper, or books at your local library.
· Summer field trips - Students can go to museums, zoos, or local parks and write about their experience.
· Read the book, and then see the movie - By using the excitement of an upcoming movie, you can have your student read the book first, then go to see the movie. You can discuss the difference between the two.
· Game night -There are plenty of fun and educational games that students can play; make it a family night or have a play date.
· New word contest -Pick a new word from the dictionary each week, post the word on the refrigerator or somewhere everyone will see it, and see who can use the word in a sentence the most in one week.
