March 2011 - Top 5 Picks

Each month we'll highlight a special Top 5 list related to our Peoples Top Pick.

The Top 5 Critical Thinking Skills:

Top educators from around the nation rated the importance of the specific traits, attributes, and characteristics of critical thinkers.

These 5 rated the highest, in the following order:

1.       Higher Order Thinking

2.       Problem-solving

3.       Questioning

4.       Drawing Conclusions

5.       Truth Seeking

Regarding higher order thinking, it’s a close call: 60% of those surveyed feel critical thinking skills and higher order thinking skills are synonymous, while 40% don’t. Here’s one opinion:

“Sometimes is the better response. Some students are highly analytical; we've trained them well. There is frequently, however, one glaring omission. [Students] have difficulty with synthesis. Creating something new and unexpected can throw them. That is the higher order thinking skill that I most associate with critical thinking that seems to be neglected in current pedagogy."

-Kimberley Gilles, English Teacher, Monte Vista High School, San Ramon Valley Unified School District, CA
