The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a clear set of K–12 grade-specific expectations for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Developed by a consortium of states and coordinated by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), they define what it means for students to be college and career-ready in the 21st century.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are:

  • fewer, clearer, higher
  • evidence-based
  • internationally benchmarked
  • high-quality and consistent
  • aligned with college and work expectations

  • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
  • Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

CCR Anchor Standards for Writing

  • Text Types and Purposes
  • Production and Distribution of Writing
  • Research to Build and Present Knowledge
  • Range of Writing

CCR Anchor Standards for Speaking and Listening

  • Comprehension and Collaboration
  • Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

CCR Anchor Standards for Language

  • Conventions of Standard English
  • Knowledge of Language
  • Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice are:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
